Clara Junken’s voice exudes a tenderness as well as strength. It is honest, dynamic, and beautifully wrenching. Her original songs incorporate finger picking, rhythmic unconventional chords and crunchy lead lines. Her lyrics are easy to connect to, intelligent, and cultivate depth. She was raised in Portland but went on to earn a Bachelors in Theater studies from Emerson College in Boston. She then moved to New Orleans for six years and continued with music. Some of her many influences include blues artists like Big Mama Thorton and Elmore James, classic rock legends Led Zepplin and Hendrix, folk idols Neil Young and Joni Mitchell, and such jazz gurus as Ella Fitzgerald, Bill Frisell and Miles. She has played in many projects and is happy to call Portland home again.
